For those of you who are following the speed tip series, we are talking today about the Windows XP alerter service. Although this service will be non-essential for most of you – there are some of you who should know exactly what it is this service does so as not to disable it if you need it. Thank you everyone for stopping by, in our speed tip series today we are going to discuss the Windows Error Reporting service. I don’t know about you, but I don’t want to send any information to Microsoft, I don’t care how generous they are. This service is non-essential to those of you who do not use the error logs or aren’t feeling charitable enough to send this information to Microsoft. Let’s disable it.

We are continuing in our short speedup tips by disabling the indexing service running in the background of Windows XP. This is a non-essential service that often goes unused, but chews up processing power and RAM. Some of you may already have it disabled, there is only one way to find out. Important Points to Take From This Lesson:

  1. Windows has many services running in the background
  2. Some services are essential, others are not.
  3. The Indexing Service is a non-essential service but…
  4. If you frequently use windows search, don’t disable it
  5. Uninstalling the service is better than disabling it to ensure it doesn’t get re-enabled.
