Well I have been running this website and producing videos for the past two years and many people wonder if it is possible to make a living on the internet. Well after two years of doing this, I can say with particular certainty the answer is… maybe.
Well here we go, a vague answer of course. Now although I recently did a video that showed people how to make extra money shopping and searching online – certainly this is not livable money, its more like $10 or $15 per month doing normal stuff on the interwebs. For those who are interested in making a living, you better be prepared to put in the time!
There are a number of methods people use to make money online. Firstly is the commission based system through a popular vendor program such as Amazon associates program. I've never been a fan of this one, you basically have to convince people to buy products by clicking a link through your website, and once they have checked out, you make a percentage of the revenue generated. Although this gets the most revenue, odds are you're not going to get the chunk of change unless you can REALLY convince people to click on the product through your website first.
Ad-based revenue systems such as Google Adsense are great because they allow a percentage of all advertisement clicks and a certain payout for the number of ad "impressions" people get, but you really can't get very far without generating traffic, and you can't generate traffic without creating content and knowing how to market that content.
That is where the time consuming process comes in, if you want to make money online, there is no "get rich quick" scheme. You need to sit down and build a website about a subject you are passionate about and deliver your opinions, helpful tips or even flat out entertainment. Then spend the other half of the time sharing it with the world wide web. Certainly over time you will generate traffic, I would say it will be at least a year before you generate any decent revenue. However, it may be multiple years before you can make a living. It really depends on 3 things: Consistency in creating and sharing content, popularity of your content and luck.
Perhaps a more serious post than my other ones, but that was the mood I was in this morning. Oh, I also did a video series on making money online if you guys are really bored… you can see it here.
