I've been searching around the net trying to get some understanding of what this code is. I seem to get that it is the code used for the beginning of the partition and allows the operating system to start. If it becomes corrupted the operating system may not start. I guess this can be repaired by using the operating system disk and doing a repair operation versus an install and typing some dos language but I didn't get how this helps my situation because the operating system does start. So I would think that the problem is within the Boot-US software and Ulrich knows the fix. At any rate I'll be patient and wait for his action. I sent you the file.

Well a week has gone by and me being fickled have decided to make some major changes. Hopefully this goes well. I'm upgrading to Windows 7. I'm not real clear about 7's 32bit operating system though. I talked to a tech from the Genuine Windows support team and he says the basic Home Premium should be 32bit or 64bit. What's that mean. I'm not clear about it because I have a Windows 7 64bit OS on another machine that they say runs in XP mode but that doesn't work with my needs for use with some older hardware. And Virtual VMware doesn't work either. I need a 32bit OS. Now for gaming I want the 64bit so I can take full advantage of the DirectX 11. I have that capability with my one machine now but it's not as fast as I would like it to be. So I have purchased a Sabretooth X58 board and plan on installing an Intel i7 970 CPU with 6Gb of Mushkin Ram. But I still need to add a 32bit OS on this new build. So I will want to try the dual boot series again. This should all happen with the next couple of weeks because I'm waiting to get my hands on the processor. They are so damn expensive. I allready have the Mushkin RAM, HIS 5850 GPU, Silverstone Styder 850W PSU, WD Velociraptor HDD. So this is not that big a deal to change this stuff around and hopefully end up with a computer that fits my needs.

Well Ulrich came back with some news regarding your Partition:

Craig,

please read the whole answer before doing any change to the disk.

Enclosed I am returning the modified file manual_2.sec plus two screenshots:hex.jpg shows the original end CHS values, hex_2.jpgshows the new end CHS values.

In short I have changed the end sector from D3h to FFh. Please note that this value also contains two bits of the cylinder number. The end sector is now 63 (3Fh) which is the standard value.

If you restore the file manual_2.sec to the disk and reboot the number of sectors per track should be the standard value 63.

There is a problem however !!!

The whole disk was installed with the low value of sector per track = 19 (13h). Therefore the restore operation does not solve the installation problem since the first partition starts already in the second track which is LBA number 19 (13h). This means even if you restore the file manual_2.sec and the disk parameters are changed to standard values (especially sectors per track should be 63) the installation to the mbr (track 0) is not possible since the first partition starts already on the LBA sector 19 (13h).

If you want to use this disk for installing the boot manager it requires at least to delete and reinstall the first partition. After the reinstallation the first partition would start at LBA = 63 and there would be enough space in the track 0 for the boot manager.

Propably due to the change of the disk parameters the other partitions might
not work any more too, and might require also a reinstallation.

In short: after restoring manual_2.sec you would need to reinstall all partitions.

I know that is bad news.

The quickest solution is to install the boot manager on another disk which does have the standard disk parameters, and not changing anything on the current disk.

Regards

Ulrich Straub

It sounds to me like there will be alot of work to getting yourself back to the basics. It appears there was a configuration of your disk when it was shipped that prevented the Boot-US from working properly right out of the box.

I really don"t understand what all that meant and I don't need to focus on that computer anymore. The thing died and has been thrown away. I got another MoBo and installed Windows 7 home premium 32bit and that works for what I need it to do. I will focus on the 64Bit OS with this other build I've almost completed. It would have been easier to have both 32bit and 64bit OS on one computer but I'm also juggling with SSD hard drive space vs cost. I have just purchased a OCZ Vertex 3 SSD and to only get about 240GB  for $580 is really making the decision about how to set this up difficult.

It appears the link you provided from flickr is a dead link, I just attempted to visit it manually.
