Smart Defrag has been out for quite awhile now and many people do not even know it exists. For those of you who do not know what Defragmentation Software is – it reorganizes “fragmented” files that are on your hard drive. Fragmentation occurs when your hard drive stores a larger file into multiple locations of your hard drive. When you access that file your hard drive needs to take extra steps to pick up the data from multiple locations and cache it for use. Smart Defrag not only rearranges those files so that they are together, but it also places the most frequently used files closer to the central pin of the hard drive for faster access

The last access update timestamp exists in your system for updating reporting services in the background of Windows Vista. For those of you who never use these reporting services (which is most of you) – you will find this service completely useless to you. That is why it is a good idea to disable it for all of you who don’t need it.

Today’s video is a continuation of yesterdays. Yesterday we disabled the automatic defragmentation software that runs in the background of Windows Vista daily. Today, we will replace the disk defragmentation software with a freeware alternative known as smart defrag. The Smart Defrag software does a much better job of defragmenting a hard drive then the built in utility offered by microsoft. It also offers additional features and functionality such as real time defragmenting and starting on windows startup. Defragmentation can help increase Disk Access speeds of the computer.

Today’s video shows you how to disable the automatic disk defragmentation utility that runs in the background of Windows Vista. Microsoft opted to automatically enable this feature in Windows Vista because they decided most people didn’t know what disk defragmentation was, so they would enable it for them. It runs on a scheduled scan every night. There are two problems with this solution, however, the automatic windows disk defragmentation utility is outdated and there is another free alternative that does a much better job. So this is the first step in replacing it.
